The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization formed in Springfield, Illinois, after the Civil War in 1866. Its purpose was to support the veterans who served bravely in the War. This would be in the form of securing pensions for not only the soldiers but also the widows and orphans, building state homes to care for disabled veterans, and comradeship with the brothers with whom they served.
The GAR was formed under the command of Dr. Benjamin Franklin Stevenson. The first Post was located in Decatur, Illinois, and was open to Union soldiers, sailors, and marines who were honorably discharged from the military and served between April 12, 1861, and April 9, 1865.
